I do not wish to suggest that all Franciscan Spirituals were good or orthodox
I do not wish to suggest that all Franciscan Spirituals were good or orthodox. I reject any view promoted within the Spiritual movement that departs from Catholic teaching, just as I reject any non-Catholic individuals or groups connected with it.
The Spirituals were not a single organized group, but a loose movement of friars within the Franciscan Order seeking to follow the original observance as St. Francis intended, and opposed to any departure from it.
Although the term “Spirituals” emerged later, their origins can be traced back to the early Franciscan Order.
Blessed John of Parma was sympathetic to stricter reform and rigorous observance within the Franciscan Order, while Blessed Conrad of Offida is generally linked with the Spirituals; both are recognized as blessed by the Church.
On the other hand, Michael of Cesena and Bonagratia of Bergamo, who outrageously opposed Pope John XXII by joining Louis of Bavaria and supporting Antipope Nicholas V, were not part of the Spirituals.
