"Praised be Thou, my Lord"

What Blessed Giles of Assisi Said to Two Cardinals Who Asked Him to Pray for Them

Source: Google Books

“Two cardinals came to him and earnestly begged him to pray for them. He replied:

“It is not necessary for me to pray for you; you have a stronger faith and a greater hope than I.” — “How so?” they asked him.

Giles of Assisi continued: “You live amid honors, riches, and the pleasures of life, and yet you hope to attain salvation; whereas I, on the contrary, spend my days in afflictions and every kind of hardship, and yet I fear being damned.”

The cardinals withdrew, deeply moved by these words and resolved to lead a more perfect life.”
