Meeting of King Saint Louis with Blessed Giles of Assisi

When Saint Louis, King of France, came to Rome, he wished to visit Brother Giles, who was in Perugia. The king went there without revealing his identity and asked to see him. As soon as the two saints saw one another, they recognized each other, embraced, and then remained for quite some time looking at each other before parting without saying a single word.

People asked Brother Giles why they had remained silent, and he replied that when they embraced, a light from Heaven had opened their hearts so completely that they communicated their thoughts to one another more clearly than they could have done by speaking. Any words they might have said would only have interrupted the consolation they had experienced.
