To the most beloved Sister Clare and the other sisters of San Damiano, Brother Francis, greetings in the Lord.

Since, by the inspiration of the Lord, you have made yourselves daughters and servants of the Most High, the supreme King, the heavenly Father; since you have espoused yourselves to the Holy Spirit in order to live according to the perfection of the holy Gospel, it is my will, and I make this promise on behalf of myself and my brothers, always to have as diligent a care and special solicitude for you as for ourselves.
